15. SENATORS, ADMINISTRATION ARGUE ROADLESS POLICY

Clinton administration officials and Western Republican senators this
week sharply disagreed over whether the Forest Service has complied
with
environmental and administrative laws in developing its roadless area
initiative.
The procedural assault on the administration’s effort to protect 54
million acres of undeveloped national forest land that remains outside
designated wilderness areas came at a hearing of the Senate forests
and
public lands subcommittee on Tuesday.
