Why this year’s bull trout spawning count is down across the board in the Swan and Flathead river drainages is not a mystery to state biologist Tom Weaver.

This year’s counts of redds, or spawning beds, can be attributed to record-low counts six years ago — when many of this year’s spawners were born. And those counts can largely be traced back to poor counts and conditions six or seven years before then.
